History

The Institute for the History of Medicine (IGM) is the only institution of its kind in Germany with no university affiliation.

Rather, IGM is affiliated with the Robert Bosch Foundation (Robert Bosch Stiftung GmbH), one of the largest German foundations associated with a private company.

IGM was first established in 1980, but its activities began several decades before that. During the 1960s and 1970s the Robert Bosch Hospital had a research center for the history of medicine, the immediate predecessor of today’s IGM.

The Institute’s existence is indebted to the early interest of Württemberg industrialist Robert Bosch (1861-1942) in the history of health care, especially homeopathic medicine.
