The Jewish Lehrhaus in Stuttgart 1926-1937

A doctoral project supported by the Heidehof Foundation (researcher: Anja Waller, MA) investigates the history of the Jewish Lehrhaus in Stuttgart between 1926 and 1937. The Stuttgart Lehrhaus was founded in 1926 based on the model of the famous Frankfurt Lehrhaus, the place of activity of Franz Rosenzweig and Martin Buber. The original initiators, whose aim was also to promote dialogue between Jews and Christians, kept close contact with Theodor Bäuerle, advocate of adult education and founder of the Stuttgart Volkshochschule (adult education organisation). The project does not only examine the foundation, conception and development of the Stuttgart Lehrhaus, but also the influence that the contemporary educational reform movement exerted on this Jewish adult education institution.
