Homeopathic Archive

The Institute’s archives house the private papers of Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843), of his second wife Mrs. Mélanie d’Hervilly (1800-1878), and of important students and successors. For instance, the archives have important documents relating to Clemens (1785-1864) and Friedrich von Bönninghausen (1828-1910), whose unpublished works contain nearly one hundred fifty medical case books.

Besides 55 medical case books and various manuscripts, over 5,400 letters to Hahnemann from patients are included. In recent years, the Institute’s active collection has yielded even more records from homoeopathic doctors and from many institutions such as homoeopathic layman associations, the German Central Association of Homoeopathic Doctors (Deutschen Zentralverein homöopathischer Ärzte), and the International League of Homoeopathic Physicians.

The archive has also acquired the correspondence of patients’ associations fostering homoeopathic medicine and natural healing practices, as well as patient records from homeopathic medical offices. With these materials, the archive harbors the world’s most important collection of sources on the history of homoeopathy.

When you visit the archives you can locate the required items via databases or inventories in our reading room. Archival records are unique and not for loan. Copies and scans are available on request.
